Redesign time
Since most of my work is Web Standards related It was high time to redesign my own site to match this.

Launched!
I got frustrated and launched the half finished redesign. I did not implement any database nor use any php, as I just published my template files. There is not much content because of that.
I am quite pleased about the outcome, however there are still some bugs and inconsistencies I'd like to weed out.

Putting your money where your mouth is
I have been preaching and teaching about web standards for couple of years now, and my old site used many non standard technologies such as tables and Flash to construct something that could be accomplished better without them.
I did not want to simply construct the old design in standards compliant code, but have a full and fresh redesign. I kept the language in English even though I should know better living in Finalnd and all.
This is not a Weblog
One of the main ideas as I started the redesign was not to make this look like weblog. Even though the standard two column 750px wide layout is good, it is quite boring. Moreover I am not much of a writer, so there will most likely not be that much content on the site anyway.
Second thing besides web standards is pondering about the back-end. I know that new site will use at least a bit of PHP, but I'm quite open about should I use Movable Type or some Midgard application as Content Management System. I could even build my own CMS, but that really isn't in my core competence area. It would be time consuming but educating task.
I would like to accomplish something more personal on the look and feel of
the site. I know how to make clean good corporate sites, but this should be
more about me. This does not mean it should be arty or something fancy.
After many problems with 3 column liquid CSS layout I promised myself I would
newer (or at least for some time) design a liquid site. However after ruling
about the standard 750px wide layout, and pondering what is good about the
old site, I once again decided on using liquid layout.
Other thing I am pondering is the language. I'm native Finn and all my customers are Finnish, so why to stick to English? Well there is no real reason to this. But Since I’m also pondering about actually advertising my services, I Just might have to build 2 sites. On for personal playground (this) and one for corporate site that will be in Finnish.
